Live in Northern VA? Join Burke's Environmental 4-H Club!

In-person 4-H Meetings (scroll down for more info) :

  • June 27, 2024 7-8pm EDT: Burke's Environmental 4-H Club Virtual Info Session

  • August 15, 2024 7-8pm EDT: Citizen Science: Bluebird Monitoring Walk

Founded by the directors of the Changing Planet Justice Foundation. Club activities include:

  • Bluebird Monitoring (citizen science!)

    • As a bluebird monitor, you’ll get to open up birdhouses and check for nests, eggs, or even chicks inside! Then, you’ll record what you found and share the data with the VA Bluebird Society. We’ll walk you through the steps—it’s very easy.

  • Grow a Row

    • As a club, we’ll grow fruits and veggies to donate to a local food bank. We’re partnering with a non-profit organization that will help us do this.

  • Native plant and pollinator identification

    • We’ll teach you how to identify these creatures using some super cool technology.

  • Experiments, crafts, and games

    • We’ll go on nature walks, do some stream monitoring (we look for macroinvertabrates, test the salinity and pH of local streams, and more.) There will also be indoor science experiments and games to learn about the environment. We’re also going to do recycled art projects and an “up cycling” workshop, where you’ll learn how to make new clothes and objects out of recycled items.

  • Presentation

    • We’ll work on communication skills, and club members will create a brief poster presentation about an environmental topic of their choice.

  • We also ask the members what they’re interested in doing! Our activities and meetings will be based on your ideas and interests.
